Malmesbury is a market town and north west Wiltshire Council parish, where Æthelstan, the first king of all England to AD 939, is buried in Malmesbury Abbey.
The town is bypassed to the west by the A429 road which heads north for the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, via  Crudwell.
To the south,  Corston is the next parish on the A429.
The  Tetbury branch of the River Avon flows from the Gloucestershire boundary through  Brokenborough and the north of
the town, while the  Sherston branch of the River Avon flows from the west, between Easton Grey and Norton,
then forms the southern boundary of the town with the parish of St Paul Malmesbury Without before the confluence
at the town's south east, before flowing under the A429 road, east towards  Lea, then onwards to  The Somerfords in the south east.
