Category for sites corresponding to the ancient district of Nicosia which includes the capital city of the same name. The district stretches from the west coast, Morphou Bay, to Kyrenia District, in the north, Larnaca District to the east, and Limassol District to the south.

Both the city and district were divided by a United Nations Buffer Zone, Green Line, since the 1960s following the intercommunal violence.  Since 1974 the north of Nicosia has been administered by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), under the Districts of Lefkosa (North Nicosia) and Guzelyurt (Morphou). The south remained administered as part of the Republic of Cyprus, with both communities retaining their part of the city as the island's capital. The ancient district of Nicosia also includes the Turkish Cypriot enclave of Erenkoy (Kokkina exclave) separated from the rest of the TRNC, by the Lefkosia District retained by Republic of Cyprus.  This category may also be suitable for sites specifically about the disputed parts of this ancient district, such as Nicosia International Airport, currently held in the United Nations Buffer Zone.

It is located on the River Pedieos and situated almost in the centre of the island, and is the seat of government as well as the main business centre. Following the intercommunal violence of the 1960s, the capital was divided between the island's Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities in the south and north respectively. An attempted coup to unite the island with Greece in 1974 led to a Turkish invasion, leaving the capital divided since then. On 3 April 2008, as part of efforts to reunify the island, a symbolic wall dividing the two communities at Ledra Street was opened.
