Aasiaat is located in the southern corner of Disco Bay. With just over 3000 inhabitants it is Greenland’s fourth largest town. The town is home to a shrimp and crab factory, a ship building yard and several service institutions. The colony was established in 1759 by Niels Egede. Aasiaat was originally named Egedesminde after Hans Egede (father of Niels) who was a Norwegian missionary. The colony was originally located on the "Eqalussuit" peninsula but was moved in 1763 to Aasiaat Island where it is today. Prior to the colony's arrival, the area was home to seal hunters and fisherman.

Ilulissat, widely known by its Danish name, Jakobshavn (Jacobs Harbour) is the third largest town in Greenland and home to more than 4500 inhabitants. Located 350 km north of the Polar Circle, it plays an important role in Greenland’s halibut fishing industry. Its proximity to the Ilulissat Ice Fjord makes it a popular tourist destination. Ilulissat was also the birthplace of Knud Rasmussen, a polar explorer and anthropologist whose first expedition began in 1902. He led several expeditions in the early 1900s including traveling over the Viscount Melville Sound and crossing the Northwest Passage by dogsled. Today, his house is home to the town museum.

Kangerlussuaq (Greenlandic for “Long Fjord”) is one of two entry airports to Greenland. Located at the bottom of the 175 km (110 mile) fjord, the airfield operates as the international gateway to Greenland. The airport was first established as a United States Air Base in World War II, and was code named “Bluie West 8”. Following the war, the airport was renamed Sondrestrom Air Base in 1951 where it operated until its closing in 1992. Now the airport is the busiest in Greenland and a primary entry point for researchers, businessmen, and tourists. Kangerlussuaq offers much more than just an airport though. The town is the only location in Greenland where visitors can travel by car to the inland Ice Cap, making it a popular tourist destination. The area surroundings also offer visitors an Arctic wildlife experience. Dog sled and snowmobile trips are available to allow visitors to witness local musk oxen, reindeer, arctic fox and birds first hand.

The Maniitsoq area has been populated for more than 3000 years. The earliest settlements were from the Saqqaq cultures, with later settlements by the Inuit cultures as well. Early European whale hunters visited the area beginning in the 17th century, but the first European settlement wasn’t established until 1755. The first municipal council was elected in 1951, and the formation of the Home Rule Government in 1979 gave way to the formation of the political parties and municipal elections found today. The town itself is home to a vocational school, and also includes three small settlements: Kangaamiut, Napasoq and Atammik. Kangaamiut, located just north of the town is the largest settlement in Greenland. Fishing is the primary industry with a large factory located in Kangaamiut, but the settlement also has its own sports center and newspaper.

Narsaq (Greenlandic for “The Plain”) is located near the southern tip of Greenland and is home to approximately 1,700 residents. Popular to visitors for many reasons, the town and surrounding landscape stands out for its view of the Northern Lights, natural wildlife, and unique stones and minerals created by the volcanic geology of the area. The coastal area surrounding the town is populated with seals, Salmon, Arctic Char, and small whales, and you might also find a reindeer or two. The pleasant climate and favorable hunting grounds have made Narsaq and the surrounding area a popular settlement for many cultures beginning with the Saqqaq around 2500 B.C.. The first trading post was established in 1830 and was called "Nordproven" or "The Northern Test". The success of the trading post resulted in the name change to Narsaq. Until the construction of a fishing factory in 1953, area inhabitants remained nomadic and few houses were built. Following the opening of the factory, the local population settled down and began constructing permanent homes. In 1959, the population exceeded 600 and Narsaq was given it's town status.

Narsarsuaq is a small community of approximately 200 residents located about 50km northeast of Narsaq. The main occupation for the residents is with the airport and accompanying hotel. The surrounding area is inhabited by sheep farmers and fisherman. Originally, Narsarsuaq was built during World War II as a United States air base code named “Bluie West One”. The former officers mess is now a museum offering a glimpse of the base from 1941-1958. In 1958 the US air base closed, but following the shipwreck of the Danish ship “Hans Hedtoft” and the loss of all on board Danish authorities reopened the airfield and commissioned a Danish Air Force station to make ice-observations and broadcast reports to ships in the area. Since January 1, 1988 the airport has been operated by the Greenlandic Home Rule.
