Narsaq (Greenlandic for “The Plain”) is located near the southern tip of Greenland and is home to approximately 1,700 residents. Popular to visitors for many reasons, the town and surrounding landscape stands out for its view of the Northern Lights, natural wildlife, and unique stones and minerals created by the volcanic geology of the area. The coastal area surrounding the town is populated with seals, Salmon, Arctic Char, and small whales, and you might also find a reindeer or two. The pleasant climate and favorable hunting grounds have made Narsaq and the surrounding area a popular settlement for many cultures beginning with the Saqqaq around 2500 B.C.. The first trading post was established in 1830 and was called "Nordproven" or "The Northern Test". The success of the trading post resulted in the name change to Narsaq. Until the construction of a fishing factory in 1953, area inhabitants remained nomadic and few houses were built. Following the opening of the factory, the local population settled down and began constructing permanent homes. In 1959, the population exceeded 600 and Narsaq was given it's town status.
