Newman, located on the west side of Stanislaus County near Interstate 5, is a small town located about 40 miles southwest of Modesto, the county seat. Like most of Stanislaus County, Newman is primarily agricultural, although an award-winning downtown revitalization effort in the early 1990s has increased retail growth. The city was founded in 1888.
