Salida is located in the Central Valley of California, just northwest of Modesto on highway 99. Originally a Southern Pacific Railway town, founded in 1870 as Murphy's Switch, the city became Salida, the Spanish word for "exit," in 1875. Commercial and residential growth on Modesto's northwestern border have also brought fast growth to the much smaller city of Salida.
