Madison [New Haven County] was incorporated from Guilford in May 1826 and named from President James Madison. It was formerly known as East Guilford.

Total area, 36.8 sq. miles, Land area, 36.2 sq. miles. Population, est., 18,280. Voting districts, 2.

Manchester [Hartford County] Connecticut was incorporated from East Hartford in May of 1823, and named from Manchester, England, because of manufacturing. Originally called Orford parish.

Area, 27.7 sq. miles. Population, est., 51,657. Voting districts, 12. Principal industries, engineered fibers, steel metal fabrication, plastics, machine tool companies, printing, warehouse/distribution facilities, electronic equipment, aircraft and missile components.

Manchester is also home to one of the largest regional retail concentrations in New England. The Buckland Hills area includes over 3 million square feet of retail and service anchored by the Pavilions at Buckland Hills mall, over 300 hotel rooms, restaurants, movie theaters.

Mansfield [Tolland County] was originally called Ponde-town, its Native American name being "Noubesetuck". It was settled in 1686 and incorporated in 1702, named from Major Moses Mansfield.

Marlborough [Hartford County] Connecticut was named in 1747 from great Duke of Marlborough, or from Marlborough, Massachusetts. It was incorporated from Colchester, Glastonbury and Hebron, in Oct., 1803. Previously known as Eastbury and New Marlborough.

Area, 23.4 sq. miles. Population, est., 5,754. Voting Districts, 1. Residential community.

Meriden [New Haven County] was named in 1664 deed from "Meriden Farms" in Dorking, Surrey, England and was incorporated from Wallingford in May 1806.

Total area, 24.1 sq. miles, Land area, 23.8 sq. miles. Population, est., 56,451. Voting districts, 17. Home of Protein Sciences, Thompson Candy Co., TI Group Automotive, RFS Cablewave, AMF Cuno, Packard BioScience, Response Insurance. Manufactured products are aircraft products, electronics, biotech filters, nuclear instrumentation, electrical signalling and communications equipment, tools, dies, molds and patterns, phosphorous brass and bronze in sheets, pewter products, auto fuel injection devices, automated buffing and deburring machines, women's apparel, plastics, engine gaskets, corrugated boxes and submersible pumps.

Middlebury [New Haven County] was incorporated from Southbury, Waterbury and Woodbury in October1807. It was named from its position in those town in 1790.

Middlefield [Middlesex County] was named in 1744 from the rural part of Middletown. It was incorporated from Middletown in 1866.

Area, 13.3 sq. miles. Population, est., 4,107. Voting districts, 2. Principal industries, agriculture and manufacture of cement products, gun sights and gun parts, novelties in plastics, thermometers, hardware specialties, such as wire cutters, tools, dies, fixtures, machinery, and work holding devices.

Middlefield includes the village of Rockfall.

Middletown [Middlesex County] was incorporated in 1651 and named in 1653 from its position on the Connecticut River between the upper river towns and Saybrook. Its Native American name is "Mattabeset".

Milford [New Haven County] Connecticut was settled in 1639 under New Haven and named in 1640. It united with Connecticut Colony in 1664 but was not incorporated as a city until 1959. Its Indian name is Wepawaug.
