Hawaii, one of the world's most popular vacation destinations, is also the world's most isolated major population center. Its population of more than one million lives on the eight major islands, though more than one hundred outer islands stretch northeast along the Hawaiian archipelago. The Hawaiian Islands are shield volcanos formed by a magma hotspot under the Pacific plate; the island of Hawaii is home of Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. The isolation of the islands belies thousands of unique species of plants and animals, over 300 of which are today endangered. Originally settled by Polynesians, Hawaii was unified by King Kamehameha shortly after its first contact with Europeans, by Captain James Cook's expeditions of the 1770s. The last native ruler, Queen Liliuokalani, was overthrown in 1893 with the backing of American business interests. Hawaii was admitted to the United States in 1959, the 50th and youngest state.

At more than 4000 square miles, the island of Hawaii is the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, hence its nickname - the Big Island - and it's the newest. It is, in fact, still forming land mass due to the near continuous eruption of the Kilauea volcano. From it base on the Pacific Ocean floor to its twin volcanic summits of Mauna Kea (extinct) and Mauna Loa (dormant), the island of Hawaii rises more than 30,000 feet and is actually the tallest mountain on earth. Mt Everest in the Himalayas does reach a higher altitude, but its base is a mere 8000 feet below its peak.

Information and resources regarding the Island of Kahoolawe. This island is uninhabited. It was taken over by the US military during World War II and was extensively damaged by military testing and training activities. In 2003 it was returned to the state. It is being administered by the state as a trust for a future Native Hawaiian sovereign entity. Extensive environmental restoration (including removal of unexploded ordnance) is ongoing.
Kauai, the Garden Island, is the oldest of the main Hawaiian islands. It is considered the most pristine of the main islands with its many white sandy beaches and verdant mountains and valleys. Quite uniquely no buildings taller than a coconut tree are allowed to be built on Kauai. Scenic sites include picturesque Hanalei Bay, the Na Pali Coast, and Waimea Canyon -- the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Kauai also boasts the only navigable river in Hawaii, the Wailua River which flows from inaccessible Mt. Wai'ale'ale, high above its which in its remote mountain top reaches has the wettest spot on earth drawing an average of 480 inches per year. The climate and rainfall patterns on Kauai, however, have more in common with the other Hawaii Islands in which mild sunny dry weather is normal for every month of the year with summers slightly drier and winters somewhat damper usually because of night and early morning showers. A favorite for movie directors looking for paradise, Kauai's spectacular beauty has provided the backdrop for a huge array of films including 'South Pacific,' 'Uncommon Valor,' 'King Kong,' 'Fantasy Island,' 'Blue Hawaii,' 'The Thorn Birds' and, most recently, 'Jurassic Park' and 'Six Days, Seven Nights.'

The second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, Maui, nicknamed "the Valley Isle," is home to more than 140,000 people. Hawaiians say, "Maui No Ka Oi" which means "Maui is the best". A popular vacation spot, Maui is famous for its spectacular beauty, ranging from the tropical rainforests along the road to Hana, to the summit of Haleakala, the world's largest dormant volcano. It boasts many world-class resorts and golf courses, and is the unofficial "windsurfing capital of the world."
