Palmer is a tiny town (population about 200) in Pocahontas County. The grain elevator is the largest business. The town is sprouting new businesses in its recycled school building. Palmer is best known for its champion basketball teams from the 1980's. Since 1990 Palmer has joined with a neighboring town to form the Pomeroy-Palmer school district, which continues to have great success in basketball as well as the newer "sport" of electrathon car racing. The Wiegert Prairie Farmstead, a preserved turn-of-the-century farm operated jointly by the county historical society and conservation board, is located near Palmer, and hosts an annual Farmfest each August and schoolchildren's visits each May. Kalsow State Prairie Preserve, Cooper's Cove Park, and many wildlife areas are also nearby.

Plover is a tiny town (population about 95) in Pocahontas County. Founded in 1882 on high ground between Beaver and Pilot Creeks, and originally centered around its railroad depot, Plover was named for the bird of the same name. In the late 1800's and early 1900's Plover was a bustling town with many businesses. Like many small Iowa towns, Plover is quieter now, but its residents are proud to call Plover home. Seventeen out of its 95 residents serve on the volunteer fire department. The town has a library and city park with basketball court, and Meredith Park, just north of town, provides swimming, fishing and camping. Plover students attend the Pocahontas Area Community schools.

Pocahontas is the county seat of Pocahontas County, in northwest Iowa. With a population of just under 2,000, Pocahontas offers the friendly community atmosphere of rural Iowa combined with many of the advantages of larger cities. A newly-expanded hospital, with specialist clinics and doctors' offices, serves the local area. The Pocahontas Area Community school system, including students from Pocahontas, Rolfe, and Havelock, has received top assessments, and boasts a state-of-the-art technology facility, and fine sports and music programs. Pocahontas is home of the 2001 high school mock trial national championship team.
