Dodge City, located in Southwest Kansas, can be found near the geographic center of the United States and is the heart of the old west. Known as the cowboy capitol of the world with its rich western heritage, it has the reputation of being a wild and lawless town which coined such phrases as "get the hell out of Dodge!" As with cities in other Great Plains states, Dodge City owes its origins and development largely to cattle drives, fur trading and the railroad. Famous for gunfights, shootouts and cowboy gangs, Dodge City is home to the renowned Boot Hill, where cowboys were buried with their boots on, sticking out of the ground. The current population of Dodge City is approximately 24,000, of which about 65% are of Hispanic origin and it is located 2550 feet above sea level. Its major industries are tourism, cattle, beef, and farming.
