Settled about 1791, and named Curatevo, in honor of a foreign port visited by Captain Allen. Area granted in 1794 to Jacob Abbott. In 1812, name was changed to honor a former landowner, M. Phillips. 193rd town in the state to be incorporated. In 1823, a part of town was set off as Salem.
