Area is rich in early settlement history. In 1607, Sir George Popham established one of the first posts in America from part of the Pejepscot Purchase. In 1716, a fishing village located in the vicinity was renamed, Augusta. Later, during Lovell''s war, the village was abandoned. A resettlement occurred around 1737. In 1814, a part of Georgetown was set aside, renamed for Sir William Phipps, and incorporated as the Town of Phippsburg.
