One of the oldest cities in the United States, founded in 1601. The name is French, for a straight part in a river, and the city lies across the Detroit River (part of the St. Lawrence Seaway) from Windsor, Ontario, in Canada. Once a thriving industrial center and still the hub of the American auto industry, the city has been in serious decline since devastating race riots occurred in 1967. Large tracts of land are now vacant as houses razed for unpaid taxes have not been replaced, but the city is bounded to the east by Grosse Pointe, one of the wealthiest suburbs in the nation. City boosters hope that legalized casino gambling will now provide dollars for the local economy. Hockey fans can root for the Redwings, basketball fans for the Pistons, baseball fans for the Tigers, and football fans for the Detroit Lions.
