Columbus was founded in 1821 . Before its incorporation, the town site was referred to informally as Possum Town, which remains its nickname even today. Columbus' existence owed to the failure of a flooded settlement across the river, Plymouth, which was established in 1817 . The Plymouth Bluff (above the ruined settlement) eventually became an environmental center for Mississippi University for Women . Early in its history, Columbus was referred to as "Columbus, Alabama" due to a mistaken estimate of the territorial boundary. During the American Civil War, Columbus was a hospital town. As a result, it largely avoided Union attack. Many of the casualties from the Battle of Shiloh were brought there, and thousands were buried in the town's Friendship Cemetery. The decision of a group of ladies to decorate the Union and Confederate graves with flowers together on May 29, 1866 is credited as part of the founding of Memorial Day . Another result of Columbus's history as a hospital town was the sparing of its antebellum homes, making its collection second only to Natchez as the most extensive in Mississippi. Columbus has hosted the Columbus Air Force Base since World War II . Columbus boasted a number of industries during the mid-twentieth century, including the world's largest toilet seat manufacturer and major mattress, furniture, and textile plants. Columbus is also the birthplace of famous playwright Tennessee Williams. His birthplace, formerly the rectory of nearby St. Paul's Episcopal Church, is now the welcome center for Columbus (300 Main St., Columbus)

In 1833 the Madison County Board of Police appointed surveyor John B. Peyton to select a geographical center for a new county seat and to lay it out in blocks. In 1834, the land for the town was legally incorporated — a lively community of 400. This was the beginning of our town, now molded by 160 years of history into its present distinctive character. It was an early farming center with cotton fields worked by many slaves--a fact that later caused the area to be the only county outside the Delta with blacks outnumbering whites four to one. Some of its affluent citizens built beautiful antebellum homes. It became a big railroad, lumber and saloon center. Battered by two Union invasions in the Civil War; challenged by the financial and political chaos of the Reconstruction; decimated by the yellow fever epidemic of 1870; rocked economically by the collapse of the lumber and sawmill heyday in the Depression of the Thirties; torn by racial strife in the 1960’s: our town has survived to remain a friendly, progressive community, still appreciative of its colorful past. Proud to share the humor and the romance of it’s distinctive Southern personality. The 160 year-old town has come a long way in restoring structures and attracting new businesses to the central business district. In 1982, the Canton Courthouse Historic Square District was officially entered in the National Register of Historic Places and declared one of the three best examples of Greek Revival architecture in the state. The Register cited the beauty of the diverse cornices, facades, and pediments of the original buildings with their neoclassical and Italianate architecture. A combination of work, organization and money through the Canton Redevelopment Authority, the Chamber of Commerce/Main Street Association and public and private investors who have attempted to restore this quaint Madison County town. In attracting merchants to the central business district, Canton has developed several incentive programs. Through the partnership created with the public and private sector, Canton has recaptured the feeling of "stepping back in time" while re-creating a Central Business district that is positioning Canton for its place in the twenty-first century. Church Hill is a small community in Jefferson County, Mississippi.

Clarksdale, founded by John Clark in 1848, was incorporated in 1882, and is now the major city of the County. Located at the head of navigation on the Sunflower River, many of Clarksdale’s businesses are built fronting this stream. The original site of Clarksdale was also the former intersection of two important Indian routes: The Chakchiuma Trade Trial which ran northeastward to old Pontotoc, and the Lower Creek Trade Paths which extended westward from Augusta, Georgia to New Mexico. In 1892 Clarksdale became one of the seats of Coahoma County when a ontroversy of more than ten years was compromised by the passage of an act of the Legislature. This act divided the County into judicial districts with two seats of the justice: one at Friars Point, the other at Clarksdale. In 1930, the two judicial districts were abolished and Clarksdale became the county seat. Frequent floods, a fire in 1889, and very poor roads retarded the early growth of Clarksdale; but. Since 1900 Clarksdale’s growth has been consistent, and it is now one of the largest cities in the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta. (Clarksdale CVB)

In the mid-1800's, the railroad began selling land in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Sawmills sprang up to process the extensive timber being cleared from the fertile land, and, slowly but surely, farms, roads, and towns began to appear. In 1884, a rail line connecting Memphis and New Orleans was completed with a "golden spike" being driven near the spot on Jones Bayou where people had settled. Situated almost exactly halfway between Memphis and the major port of Vicksburg, the small settlement was now connected to the outside world by dependable rail service. Dependence on the river waned, and fortunes were made selling timber. In 1884 the Jones Bayou settlement appeared in county records as Fontaine, Mississippi, though at various times it had also been known as Coleman or Coleman's Station in honor of its founder. In 1885, the name of the community had changed to Sims, the name of a major property owner. Finally chartered in 1886, the settlement at last adopted its present name of Cleveland in honor of President Grover Cleveland. Soon banks, dry goods stores, saloons, and hotels shared in the growth of the community. The Delta was still plagued with numerous hardships - malaria was a constant threat well into the 20th century - but as the swamps were drained and the land cleared, more and more settlers came in with the railroad, and Cleveland prospered. The early decades of the 20th century saw unimpeded progress and growth. When major fires burned whole sections of the town, they were rebuilt. By 1915, Italian immigrant farmers had arrived and began working fields west of town, a new Consolidated Agricultural High School had been built, a volunteer fire department was established, and the Bolivar Commercial newspaper had been published. With the exception of the school which has since grown to include multiple campuses, all the above are still a part of Cleveland today. In 1915, another pillar of the Cleveland community was established with the creation of Delta Teachers College. Over the decades the Teachers College has evolved into what is now Cleveland's most prominent landmark, Delta State University. Industries including Baxter Laboratories, Du-oFast Corporation and Tyson Corporation have made Cleveland their home. The new port of Rosedale has revitalized the old county seat on the western side of Bolivar County. The future truly looks bright for this county and the city of Cleveland as they progress through their second century of life in the heart of the Delta. (Cleveland CVB)

Corinth was founded in 1853 as Cross City, so-called because it served as a junction for the Mobile & Ohio and Memphis & Charleston railroads. It was the town's early newspaper editor, W.E. Gibson, who suggested the name of Corinth, named for the city in Greece that also served as a crossroads. Corinth's location at the junction of two railroads made it strategically important to the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Today Corinth is a thriving manufacturing, retail, and tourism center.
