Lake Norman is the largest lake in North Carolina. The lake was created by Duke Power Company in 1963 by the construction of a dam across the Catawba River at Cowan's Ford. The resulting lake covers 32.510 acres and is located in Catawba, Mecklenburg, Iredell and Lincoln Counties. Named after Norman A. Cooke, retired President of Duke Power, it has a shoreline of approximately 520 miles.
