The Great Plains is not to be confused with the Midwest. The two regions do share a couple of states: Iowa and Minnesota, but are two separate regions. The Midwest region is to the east of the Great Plains, except for the common states of Minnesota and Iowa. Please submit sites regarding this area to the Midwest category.

Appalachia

Culturally and physically distinct mountainous region extending from western New York and Pennsylvania to northern Mississippi and Alabama. Definitions of the region vary. Physiographically, the Appalachian mountain system trends northeast-southwest from Maine to northern Alabama. Components include the Blue Ridge in the east; the Great Valley, including the Shenandoah, James, New, and Tennessee valleys; the Ridge and Valley; and to the west the Allegheny/Appalachian/Cumberland Plateau. (See map). Politically, the "Appalachian region" consists of the 406 counties in 13 states under the jurisdiction of the federal government body, the Appalachian Regional Commission, established in 1965 to serve a region that included some of the most impoverished areas of the U.S. West Virginia is the only state that falls entirely within the region.

Great Plains

The Great Plains region of the United States includes Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. This region is known for its fertile farming soil and relatively flat land.

Midwest

The area broadly called the Midwestern United States lies in the northern and central regions which like between the Appalachian and Rocky Mountain systems. Within the context of the ODP, the American Midwest Region comprises

New England

New England is comprised of the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. It is bounded on the north by Canada, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by Long Island Sound, and on the west by New York state.

Only regional guides, directories, businesses with locations in, or organizations with members in, more than one New England state should be submitted to categories in New England.

Sites with information pertinent to only one state should be submitted to the appropriate category under: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont.

Northeast

Category intended for websites that address multistate regions (or multiple locations) in the Northeast, including regional businesses that have only one website (franchises, corporations, etc.).

Northwest

Category intended for businesses that are located in multiple states in the Northwest but have only one website. (franchises, corporations, etc) Category is not intended for websites that represent a location specific, single business that claims to service more than one state.

Southwest

West

The western region of the United states includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The region's geography is quite varied from being mountains, canyons, deserts, coastal, volcanic and rain forests. The temperatures range from the highest in the nation from the desert region to the coldest in Alaska.

This category covers the art, business, culture, education, environment, government, maps, music, photo galleries, news and radio, recreation, science, sports, and tourism as it applies to this region.

Pages listed here should cover information that is concerned with two or more states in this region or the area as a whole.
