Claxton is an unincorporated rural community in southeastern Anderson County, consisting mainly of residential areas with some small businesses supporting the area.

Cookeville is the county seat and principal city of Putnam County.
Putnam County lies mostly to the west of the Cumberland Plateau, but the eastern edge, including the town of Monterey, is on the plateau. Cookeville is the home of the Tennessee Technological University or TTU.
Crossville is the county seat of Cumberland County. It lies roughly mid-way between Knoxville and Nashville on I-40 in the middle of the Tennessee portion of the Cumberland Plateau. Crossville is ringed with resorts and parks offering an unusual number of golf courses -- a good indication that tourism is a primary business activity. Other businesses include publishing, manufacturers of ceramic tile, office supplies, and rubber products, a bakery, cannery, wineries, and an outlet mall. The economy is diverse and solid.
