The Barkly Region is located in the central east of the Northern Territory and covers an area, of approximately 301,000 square kilometres - from 200 kilometres west of the Stuart Highway, eastwards to the Queensland border and from Dunmarra in the north, to Barrow Creek in the south. Major communities include Tennant Creek, Alpurrurulam, Ali Curung, Elliott, Canteen Creek, Epennera and a further 47 outstation communities serviced by the Julalikari Buramana Aboriginal Corporation based in Tennant Creek. The 1991 census listed the regional population at just under 5,300 with 43% of people identifying as Aboriginal.
