Cogeneration

Cogeneration: a process that converts a fuel into both thermal and electrical energy. The thermal energy may be in the form of steam, hot water, or hot air, or any combination of the three. This term is becoming obsolete, and is gradually moving towards the "CHP" (combined heat and power) term. Also includes District Energy: "District energy systems produce steam, hot water or chilled water at a central plant and then pipe that energy out to buildings in the district."

Energy economics is a subfield of economics that focuses on energy relationships as the foundation of all other relationships. It is a subfield of ecological economics in that it assumes that food chains in ecology are directly analogous to energy supply chains in human industries.

Fossil Fuel

Fossil fuels, also known as mineral fuels, are hydrocarbon-containing natural resources such as coal, oil and natural gas. The utilization of fossil fuels has enabled large-scale industrial development and largely supplanted water driven mills, as well as the combustion of wood or peat for heat.

Geothermal

Geothermal energy is heat energy from deep in the earth. Heat is brought to the near-surface by thermal conduction and by intrusion into the earth's crust of molten magma originating from great depth. Ground water is heated to form hydrothermal resources -- naturally occurring hot water and steam. Use of hydrothermal energy is economic today at a number of high-grade sites. Hydrothermal resources are tapped by existing well-drilling and energy-conversion technology to generate electricity or to produce hot water for direct use.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is the first element in the periodic table and is the smallest and lightest atom of all the elements. This category contains links related to research on hydrogen as an energy source and the development of hydrogen related devices by government, scientific and private researchers.

Nuclear

This category is related to the technological and safety aspects of the production of useful energy released by the fission of heavy nucleus.
In the nuclear fission process, the nucleus of an atom splits into two smaller atoms (fission products). This occurs naturally in radioactive elements (radioactive decay), but it can be induced artificially by making fissionable atoms absorb free neutrons.
This causes the nucleus to become unstable and makes it split apart. The fission process yields two smaller atoms, energy and several fast neutrons. Therefore, under certain conditions, the reaction can become self sustaining. This is called a chain reaction, or nuclear criticality.
A nuclear reactor is an apparatus in which nuclear fission chain reactions are initiated, controlled, and sustained at a steady rate.

Storage

Energy storage technologies help the grid (electric distribution system) handle peaks in demand. Generally these occur once or twice daily. When the energy storage is located near the load (a major city or industry) it can ameliorate problems with security or reliability of linear infrastructure. Storage helps economic dispatch by allowing more efficient power generators to charge energy for peak loads.

Transportation

Information related to energy technology in transportation, including innovative propulsion methods, alternative energy sources, and means of improving energy efficiency in transport.

Unproven Concepts

Category scope includes "free energy" concepts and inventions, descriptions of energy inventions that have not yet been successfully demonstrated, concept papers describing potential futuristic technologies that are unrelated to energy technologies now used, articles about energy inventions and R&D efforts that never lived up to the claims that were made for them, and energy technology ideas that are currently considered unorthodox. Many of the concepts described by sites in this category are generally considered to violate the second law of thermodynamics or other laws of physics.
