In general, the concept of energy refers to the potential for causing changes. In physics, energy is the ability to do work and has many different forms (potential, kinetic, electromagnetic, etc.) No matter what its form, physical energy has the same units as work; a force applied through a distance. The SI unit of energy, the joule, equals one newton applied through one meter.
Topics for this category include energy resources, energy utilization technologies, technology research and technical innovations, and analytical aspects of energy policy.

Cogeneration: a process that converts a fuel into both thermal and electrical energy. The thermal energy may be in the form of steam, hot water, or hot air, or any combination of the three. This term is becoming obsolete, and is gradually moving towards the "CHP" (combined heat and power) term. Also includes District Energy: "District energy systems produce steam, hot water or chilled water at a central plant and then pipe that energy out to buildings in the district."

Energy conservation is the practice of increasing the efficiency of use of energy in order to achieve higher useful output for the same energy consumption. This may result in increase of national security, personal security, financial capital, human comfort and environmental value. Individuals and organizations that are direct consumers of energy may want to conserve energy in order to reduce energy costs and promote environmental values.

Geothermal energy is heat energy from deep in the earth. Heat is brought to the near-surface by thermal conduction and by intrusion into the earth's crust of molten magma originating from great depth. Ground water is heated to form hydrothermal resources -- naturally occurring hot water and steam. Use of hydrothermal energy is economic today at a number of high-grade sites. Hydrothermal resources are tapped by existing well-drilling and energy-conversion technology to generate electricity or to produce hot water for direct use.
Sites about ground-source heat pump technology belong in the Heat Pumps category. This category is intended for science oriented site content. Please submit sites primarily selling products online to the most appropriate category within the Shopping branch as they will not be listed here.

This category is related to the technological and safety aspects of the production of useful energy released by the fission of heavy nucleus.
In the nuclear fission process, the nucleus of an atom splits into two smaller atoms (fission products). This occurs naturally in radioactive elements (radioactive decay), but it can be induced artificially by making fissionable atoms absorb free neutrons.
This causes the nucleus to become unstable and makes it split apart. The fission process yields two smaller atoms, energy and several fast neutrons. Therefore, under certain conditions, the reaction can become self sustaining. This is called a chain reaction, or nuclear criticality.
A nuclear reactor is an apparatus in which nuclear fission chain reactions are initiated, controlled, and sustained at a steady rate.
Sites expressing concerns about nuclear energy, stating opposition to nuclear energy or urging action against nuclear energy (e.g. activism) should be submitted to the Society/Issues/Environment/Nuclear category. Sites about nuclear fusion should be submitted to the Science/Physics/Nuclear/Fusion category.Sites about nuclear physics should be submitted to the Science/Physics/Nuclear category. Consulting companies should submit to Business/Industrial_Goods_and_Services/Engineering/Nuclear/Consulting.

Journals, other series, and similar publications focused on energy science and technology.
Individual titles are seldom listed here.
This category contains non-commercial, scientific and educational references to renewable energy science and engineering (technology). Renewable energies are classified by the fact that they do not permanently deplete their sources of energy. Renewable energy sources capture their power from existing flows of energy, from on-going natural processes, such as biological processes, flowing water, sun and wind.

Energy storage technologies help the grid (electric distribution system) handle peaks in demand. Generally these occur once or twice daily. When the energy storage is located near the load (a major city or industry) it can ameliorate problems with security or reliability of linear infrastructure. Storage helps economic dispatch by allowing more efficient power generators to charge energy for peak loads.

This category is for blogs, administered specifically to keep articles and comments on the topic of technological aspects of energy.

Please only submit sites here if they span more than one aspect of energy technology.  If the subject is specific to a field covered by another sub-category of Technology: Energy, such as Renewables, please submit there instead.
