The Viking Age is a term used by historians to describe the period of Scandinavian history from about 800 A.D. to about 1100 A.D., characterized by the raids, trade, and exploration of Norse naval power.

During the viking age and in some areas well into the 19th century writing was done by carving text into thin pieces of wood. For this purpose a special alphabet was used, the runes. This category is for sites dealing with the rune alphabet from a scientific/academic viewpoint.

Much of the success the vikings had as traders, warriors and seamen was thanks to the longships they used. This category covers various aspects of the ships during the viking age.
