Society Organizations Student Fraternities and Sororities
Fraternities and sororities (sometimes referred to as "women's fraternities") are a unique form of student organization at (primarily) North American colleges and universities. Most organizations have names which consist of two or three Greek letters which represent words or phrases outlining the organization's beliefs or history. While the implementation of fraternities and sororities varies widely from campus to campus and region to region, each group is founded on the principles of lifelong friendship and other ennobling ideals such as scholarship, chivalry, public service, and/or religious ideals.

Please submit only sites related to college fraternities and sororities, including alumni chapters and auxiliary groups such as parents clubs. Sites relating to general fraternal organizations should be submitted to Society/Organizations/Fraternal.

Submit websites to the most relevant category. Multiple submissions or careless submissions will slow the process. Review the sub-categories to find the most appropriate category for submissions. Find the lowest level category appropriate to the site being submitted. Sites under construction will not be listed and submissions will be deleted.

Descriptions should include specific information of the unique qualities and features of the site contents. Avoid advertising hype, overuse of capitalization, and emphatic punctuation. Do use the English language, proper grammar, and a spell-checker.

Affiliate sites, multiple URL''s for the same organization, and mirror sites are not desirable. The ODP reserves the right to alter or replace a proposed description at any time at its sole discretion and editorial judgment.

Class Societies

Class societies are fraternal organizations that recruit only from the one class each year. Historically, these types of organizations thrived between 1850 and 1930, although many still exist. Most are either Senior Socieites or Sophomore Societies. Originally highly secretive organizations, on many campuses, these organizations have become primarily honor societies, although they still maintain many of the traditions of the original societies. Unlike other collegiate fraternal organizations, class societies do not use Greek letters for their names.

Co-ed Fraternities

Fraternities that admit both men and women as members.

Fraternities and sororities with exclusively gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual membership or otherwise actively promoting non-heterosexual lifestyles.

This section is specifically for general ("social") collegiate fraternities and sororities that do not have a chapter system and exist on only one campus.

Men's Fraternities

Fraternities that admit only men as members.

Multi-Cultural

Fraternities and sororities that have a primary purpose of promoting multicultural awareness and have membership that includes mostly ethnic and racial minority populations of a variety of origins.

Native American

For sororities and fraternities for and focusing on Native Americans and Native issues.

Opposing Views

Sites devoted to the abolition of the Greek letter system in universities, or otherwise set in opposition to individual organizations or the system as a whole.

Philippines

For fraternities and sororities based in the country of the Philippines. These organizations are not associated with any in North America.

Companies that specialize in providing professional services to fraternities and sororities. Examples would include capital fundraising, alumni management, newsletter production, database management, or accounting.

Service Groups

This section houses sites for collegiate organizations whose functions are primarily to serve others and who are named with greek letters. This section should not include any NPC, NPHC, or NIFC groups or primarily "social" groups.

Shopping

Manufacturers and retailers of merchandise (including clothing, giftware, jewelry, accessories, and stationery) that carry the logos, letters, and/or symbol of a fraternity or sorority. These items could be custom-made or mass-produced.
