The Ahmadiyya Movement originated in Qadian in 1899 and considers its founder Mirza Ghulam Ahmad the Promised Messiah of all religions.
Because Ahmadiyya is named after Ahmad and Ahmad is another name of Holy Prophet Muhammad in Islam of whom the founder of Ahmadiyya also claimed to be reincarnation, many Muslims do not want to use the name Ahmadiyya and prefer the term Qadianism [broad sense] to designate all followers of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian.
This may cause some name ambiguity as Ahmadiyya [=Qadianism broad sense] differentiated itself in two branches:
- the Qadiani branch [Qadianism strict sense] by the official name of Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam (AMI) which after the split in 1914 remained in Qadian, recognises the prophethood claims of the founder and has a Calipha, and
- the Lahore branch by the official name of Ahmadiyya Anjuman Ishaat Islam Lahore (AAIIL) or Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement for the Propagation of Islam, which recognises the revelations of the founder but denies his prophethood claims and has no calipha.
Although in 1974 the World Muslim League, with scholars from all Muslim countries of the world, unanimously declared Ahmadiyya (both branches) as not Islamic, Ahmadiyya considers itself Islam. Therefore it is categorized in the category Islam and opposed here as criticism on Ahmadiyya "which sees itself as Islam"
