A. Bartlett Giamatti attended Yale where he graduated magna cum laude. He taught Italian, English and comparative literature there until elected the university's president. He became president of baseball's National League in 1986. At the time of his death, he was Commissioner of Baseball.

Bud Selig, a Milwaukee car dealer purchased the Seattle Pilots of the American League in 1970 for $10.8 million then moving the team to the Midwest. He presided over 232-day players' strike while de facto commissioner, that resulted in cancellation of World Series for first time since 1904. He was officially named baseball's ninth commissioner on July 2, 1998. In 2002, he made the controversial decision to end the All-Star Game after 11 innings, tied 7-7.
