Maltese-American cartoonist who originally studied as a journalist, and has combined the two fields in his work. Sacco (b. 1960) worked in newspaper and magazine publishing for several years as well as editing the comics anthology Centrifugal Bumble-Puppy, until in 1988 he started his own series, Yahoo, which presented first-person journalism on diverse subjects. His series Palestine, starting in 1993, was a portrait of life in the Israeli-occupied territories based on his travels and interviews over a two-month period. The collected edition won an American Book Award. Sacco went on to cover war and its aftermath in the former Yugoslavia, producing the book Safe Area Gorazde as well as related short stories.
