Lawrence Monsanto Ferlinghetti was born March 24, 1919 in New York.
He was a writer best known for his poetry and for publishing Beat poets during the Beat generation in the 1950s. He did not consider himself a Beat poet.
He was also co-founder of City Lights Booksellers & Publishers, the famous bookstore in San Francisco, California. The bookstore was made an official historic landmark in 2001.
Ferlinghetti passed away February 22, 2021 at the age of 101.
