American writer and illustrator of children's books, 1942-1992. Marshall wrote, co-wrote and illustrated more than forty books for children, both under his own name and that of his pseudonym, Edward Marshall. He also illustrated more than twenty-five books for other authors. Among his best known books are the George and Martha series, concerning a pair of hippopotami who are "the best of friends." His Goldilocks and the Three Bears (1988) was a 1989 Caldecott Honor Book.
