Fred (Frederick) Zinnemann was an Austrian-born film director, highly regarded in his day. He emigrated to the USA in 1929, and began making documentary films in Hollywood, such as "That Mothers Might Live" (1938, Oscar), and "Benjy" (1951, Oscar). Best remembered for "From Here to Eternity" (1953, Oscar) and "A Man for All Seasons" (1966, Oscar), his other notable films include "High Noon," "Julia," "The Sundowners," and the musical "Oklahoma." His films usually have the recurrent theme of conflict of conscience and moral dilemmas of reluctant heroes.
