Bad Taste directed by Peter Jackson was begun in October 1983 and completed in October 1987. On its release in 1988 Bad Taste quickly gained a large cult following. After its 1988 screening at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was given a standing ovation, it sold to ten countries in six days. Its successes include winning the Prix de Gore at the Paris Horror Festival (1988), the special Public Prize at the Rome Festival (1989) and nominations in eight categories of the Listener Film and Television Awards (1988). Bad Taste also won an award for the creation of a new genre in New Zealand film making, comedy splatter, presented in 1992 at the Wellington Fringe Film Festival.
