Phil Lesh was the bassist for the Grateful Dead from the band's formation in 1965 until its end, when Jerry Garcia died, in 1995. Lesh then joined other Dead members Mickey Hart and Bob Weir in the band the Other Ones in 1998. After a liver transplant late that year, he shifted directions and has been leading the various line-ups of Phil Lesh and Friends.
