English Baroque composer John Blow (1649-1708) was teacher to Henry Purcell, who was ten years his junior, yet who died before Blow. This event led him to compose the Ode on the Death of Mr Henry Purcell. He wrote one small opera, Venus and Adonis. His primary genre was church music, where he wrote twelve services, around 100 anthems, including "God Spake Sometime in Visions," and many instrumental pieces. He also wrote secular instrumental and vocal works.
