American Romantic composer and pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) was born in Louisiana and absorbed much of the culture of New Orleans and, through his extensive travels, the Americas. Forced to support his family, he kept a hectic schedule of piano concerts. When time and finances allowed, he also taught music. An affair with a female student drove him into Brazilian exile, where he died.
