Arts Music Composition Composers R Rimsky-Korsakov, Nicolai Andreyevich
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) was born in a provincial town called Tikhvin, 200 km from St. Petersburg, Russia. He almost missed becoming a composer as his family encouraged and compelled him into studying for a naval career. Part of his training was a two year journey around the world, a trip which opened him to new vistas that would later color his music. Even after the successful debut of his first symphony (under the direction of friend and mentor Mily Balakirev) Rimsky-Korsakov continued his service, leaving the Russian Navy only after eight years content that he could support himself with his music.
