French Romantic composer Erik Satie (1866-1925) could be termed a musical eccentric whose influence over others exceeded his own compositions. For a time a Rosicrucian, he later founded his own church, excommunicating those with whom he disagreed. Critical response to his music for the ballet Parade gave rise to the term and the movement called Surrealism. His compositions were often oddly titled, with Trois Gymnopédies for piano perhaps his best-known set of works.
