American Modern period composer and violinist William Grant Still (1895-1978) was led into a musical life in part due to his step-father's influence. His college career was interrupted by his work as an arranger for W. C. Handy, but he later received degrees from Wilberforce University and Oberlin Conservatory of Music and was honored by several other schools, including Howard University and Pepperdine University. Among his noted works are Afro-American Symphony and several operas, including Troubled Island.
