Black Metal is an extreme subcategory of heavy metal usually characterized by fast guitar riffs and percussion, and vocals that alternate between singing and screeching. Anti-Christian themes such as satanism, paganism, and other occult topics are common material for lyrics. Emperor, Mayhem, Darkthrone, and more widely known bands such as Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth all fall into this category.
