He is well known as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future movie series. On TV, he was best known in Family Ties as Alex P. Keaton, the conservative eldest son of liberal parents who all manage to love each other despite their strongly opposing viewpoints. He also played the part of Mike Flaherty from 1996 to 2002, as New York city's Deputy Mayor. Both TV shows were sitcoms.

Keaton was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991, but did not announce it to the public until 1998. The Michael J. Fox Foundation was started in 2000 and has contributed over 650 million dollars towards Parkinson's research.

He has been married to Tracy Pollan since 1988. They met on the Family Ties set, where they were slated to play sweethearts. They have 4 children.
