Likable comic actor best known as the pratfallprone TV writer Rob Petrie in the sitcom "The Dick Van Dyke Show," 1961-66, which earned him three Emmy awards.
He also starred in the musical "Bye Bye Birdie," 1963, recreating his Broadway role, and the Disney classic "Mary Poppins," 1964, as Bert the chimney sweep. He won a Tony Award for "Bye Bye Birdie" and a Grammy Award for the "Mary Poppins" soundtrack. Continued to star in films and other television specials and shows, such as Diagnosis Murder.
