Syntactic foam is a composite material synthesized by filling a metal, polymer or ceramic matrix with hollow spheres. These spheres, or microballoons, give syntactic foam its light weight and low thermal conductivity. Syntactic foam offers a resistance to compressive stress that exceeds that of other foam. In some cases syntactic foam also offers radar or sonar transparency.
Syntactic foam is used for buoyancy modules in marine drilling risers, in deep ocean submersibles, boat hulls and components in aircraft. New developments in the sports industry are appearing including snow skis and soccer balls.
