Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder, also called manic depression, which has two emotional sides. The changes in moods are more than normal ups and downs.
Mania, or a manic episode, is feeling extremely energetic, active, and/or aggressive.
Depression, or a depressive episode, is feeling extremely sad, hopeless, and/or empty.
Mixed episodes have both kinds of feelings; sometimes at the same time, or going up and down during the same day.
Treatment is designed to reduce the symptoms and how often episodes happen. It includes medications, education about the disorder, and psychotherapy.
