Speech Disorders are conditions that affect a person's ability to speak clearly. There are several types of disorders.

  • Stuttering is when kids repeat a letter or sound like "ssssssnake."
  • Cluttering is when words rush out in bursts or pause in the wrong place.
  • Articulation Disorders include substituting "w" for "r" or "th" for "s" or "z" and omitting sounds or adding sounds to words.
  • Apraxia is a problem between the brain and the muscles that form speech sounds into words.
  • Kids with speech difficulties may also have hearing problems or problems with the lips, teeth, or jaw. When these are corrected, speech may improve quickly.

Treatments include breathing exercises, tips to relax the muscles when speaking, posture control, and voice exercises.
