The Golden Retriever was developed as a waterfowl and game dog in the 19th Century. Hunters in the northern areas of England and Scotland needed a large strong dog that had intelligence, an affinity for the water, the will to work, and a soft mouth for retrieving. The Golden Retriever is symmetrical in appearance. It is a powerful, eager, and active dog with a kindly expression. It is alert, cheerful, and self-confident. The untemperamental Golden likes everyone and so is not usually used for guarding. However, it is a very popular guide dog for the disabled. The breed is gentle, sensitive, responsive, and good with children.
