Benin has a rich history, although its present borders are relatively recent. The Kingdom of Dahomey covered a large part of West Africa in the 17th century, and many of the slaves shipped to the Americas and the Carribbean came from this region. In 1899, Dahomey became a French colony, gaining independence in 1960. The name was changed to the People's Republic of Benin in 1975.
