The German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven is situated on a historic site in the New Harbor, which opened in 1852 and was the departure point for approximately 1.2 million emigrants to the New World by 1890. The New Harbor was adjacent to the Old Harbor (Alter Hafen), the Imperial Harbors (Kaiserhäfen) and the Columbus Wharf, all departure points for the 7.2 million emigrants who sailed for the New World from Bremerhaven.
Exhibits medieval shipping, shipping in the early modern period and the Industrial Age, fishing and whaling. Large indoor exhibition and some interesting ships in a small harbour.
In the Klimahaus there are four exhibition areas in all: The Journey, The Elements, Perspectives, Opportunities. Visitors are taken through nine stations covering the various climatic regions of the Earth. The history of the climate, ranging from the origins of the Earth 3.9 thousand million years ago and looking forward to the year 2050 is shown in the Perspectives area.
