Idar-Oberstein has a long history of mining, working and selling of gemstones and jewelry. Agates were mined until middle of the 19th century. By then agates from Brazil were much cheaper and better quality. Tons of agates were shipped to Idar-Oberstein to work those agates and other gemstones to pieces of jewelery or for design purposes.
