Situated on the east coast, this old Anglo Saxon settlement grew to prominence in the early 1800's as a result of the harbour construction. Coal mining came to the area, with the first shaft being sunk in the 1852. The mines were closed in the 1980's. A regeneration scheme has created industrial estates on the sites of the old mines bringing new business to the area. The town is located within the Easington District Council.
