The village of Lowther, a few miles south of Penrith, has been the home of the Lowther family since 1283. The family are still the largest landowners in the Lake District. Lowther Castle, built between 1806 and 1811 to a design by Robert Smirke, was the former home of the family until 1930,
when the grandeur was too much, and the castle was abandoned in favour of a smaller home in the nearby village of Askham.
