Shap village, nine miles south of Penrith, consists mainly of 18th century houses and coaching inns. It is on the A6 trunk road, and was an important stopping off point for travellers between England to Scotland, before the building of the M6.
Used to contain the England's highest mainline railway station, on the London to Glasgow main line, before the station closed.
