Sherburn-in-Elmet, and its neighbouring town South Milford, are situated on the Roman road between Tadcaster and Ferrybridge. It is primarily a commuter town, since it is in easy reach of York, Leeds and other West Yorkshire towns.
It is surrounded by industrial estates, and so is home to a number of industries. The railways also play a role in the history of the town, since it acts as the junction for trains from York, Leeds, Selby and the south.
