The town of Rotherham is situated to the North East of Sheffield and the South West of Doncaster, on the river Don and close to the confluence of the river Don and the river Rother.
Rotherham was originally an Anglo-Saxon market town. It was referred to in the Domesday Book as Rodreham, meaning town or village on the river Don.
During the industrial revolution it became a key centre for coal and iron production.
