Offa's Dyke ran through the town, and remains survive from the 8th century, both north through Newchurch and Gladestry to  Kington,
and south, where along Hay Bluff it forms the country border along the western edge of Olchen Valley to Longtown,Clodock, before entering  Monmouthshire
east of Llanthony and Cwmyoy, north of  Abergavenny.
